Hope Through Education at the Sudanese School “Zaad”

One of our “Mobile Art Studios” took place at the “Zaad Community Educational Center” in Cairo—a school for Sudanese refugee children. While Anja, Mirna, and Martin were painting with the children, Meike and Bruno struck up a conversation with Aldouma, one of the project leaders.

Aldouma spoke about the dire situation facing many Sudanese refugees in Egypt. Since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023, millions of people have been forced to flee. Many sought refuge in neighboring Egypt—but in March 2024, the situation worsened dramatically, and the EU decided to enter into a strategic partnership with Egypt, primarily to “protect” the EU from refugees from Sudan.

As a result, the Egyptian government is cracking down harshly on people from Sudan living in Egypt. Time and again, refugees report arbitrary arrests, fear of deportation, and inhumane conditions in detention. Women traveling alone with their children are particularly affected, as they often live in a state of constant uncertainty. There is virtually no access to education, medical care, or safe housing.

This makes projects like the “Zaad Voluntary Foundation” all the more important. The school not only provides children with an education, but also offers them a sense of stability, security, and hope in their daily lives. Yet even though important work is being done there every day, the project is struggling to survive. Rent, teachers’ salaries, and school supplies must be funded through the project’s own resources.

After another meeting with Aldouma and Thanaa, one of the project’s founders, it was clear to us: This school needs support. Thanks to your donations, we’ve now been able to cover the rent and teachers’ salaries for the next three months. In addition, the equipment for our “Mobile Art Room” will remain at the school permanently, so that creative activities can continue to be part of everyday school life.

That is exactly what the Caravan of Humanity stands for: providing spontaneous, unbureaucratic help wherever support is urgently needed and hope can take root. Thank you to everyone who makes this possible.
